Francis Patrick Brady inviterer til det første event i en 1-år lang udstillingsrække på det kunstnerdrevne galleri Celsius Projects i Malmø, Sverige. ALEA er den første kategori for ‘spil’ og forholder sig til sandsynlighed, tilfældighed, determinisme.
‘Five Forms of Play’ er et et-årigt langt projekt, centreret omkring fem gruppeudstillinger, som løber fra marts 2019 til marts 2020. Over 20 kunstnere er blevet inviteret til at samarbejde med kunstneren og kuratoren Francis Patrick Brady, for sammen at skabe og lære hvordan man kan ’spille’ med deres værker. At ‘spille’ forstås som: at vibrere, parodiere, opfinde, aktivere, genskabe og rekreere, simulere eller ødelægge, i en abstrakt eller fysisk forstand; simpelt sagt, det er en alternativ måde at se og interagere med kunsten på. Hver kunstner er blevet bedt om at skabe et nyt værk, eller genskabe et allerede eksisterende et, på en måde så det kan blive ‘spillet’ med, og sammen vil de ‘spille’ med hvert af værkerne, som i en symfoni eller solo, som en gruppeudstilling eller performance event.
Fra Bauhaus til Dada, Situationisterne til Fluxus – kunstnere har brugt ‘spil’ og spilificeret spekulationer til at sammensluse kaotiske, kreative energier, eller splitte det normale virkelighedsflow, for at undersøge og udfordre samfundets strukturer. Roger Caillois opdelte og beskrev ‘spil/leg’ i fire unikke kategorier, og i denne udstillingsserie benyttes disse kategorier som titler og organiserings-principper for hver udstilling; plus en femte udstilling, som en slags joker i kortbunken, eller anti-kategorien, hvilket udmunder i den sidste udstilling 20. Marts 2020 (på forårsjævndøgnet). Som i et landsby-karneval tillader dét at ‘spille’ eller ‘lege’ os at endevende sædvanlige regler, og være sammen i et nyopfundet og midlertidigt regelsæt.

Francis Patrick Brady invites you to the first event of a year long exhibition series at the artist-run gallery space Celsius Projects in Malmö. ALEA is the first part of the Five Forms of Play exhibition series and a theoretical category of play that relates to Chance, Randomness, Determinism.
‘Five Forms of Play’ is a year-long project revolving around five group exhibitions, from March 29th 2019 to March 20th 2020. Over 20 artists are invited to collaborate with the artist, pedagogue and curator Francis Patrick Brady to create and learn together how to play with their work. To play with their work means to: vibrate, mock, invent, activate, remake, recreate, simulate, or destroy, in an abstract or physical sense; put simply it is an alternative way of seeing and engaging with the art. Each artist have been commissioned to create an artwork, or rethink a current artwork, so that it can be played in some way and all together they will play with each of the works as in symphony or in solo, as group exhibition or performance event.
From Bauhaus to Dada, Situationists to Fluxus, artists have utilised play and gamified speculation to funnel chaotic creative energies or disrupt the normal flow of reality to examine the hidden structures of society. Roger Caillois divided and described play in four unique forms and in this exhibition series those forms of play are applied as the titles and organising principles of each show; plus a fifth as the wildcard in the deck or the anti-category as the final show on March 20th 2020 (Spring Equinox). Like the village carnival, play allows us to invert the rules of the day and be together in a new invented temporary set of rules.
